Last week, my brother shared this article about Best Buy's strategies for the work environment. The "results-only work environment" (ROWE) is extremely interesting. I have wondered before why more companies didn't offer employees the option to telecommute, but ROWE seems to take it to another level. They say you can work when and where you want to work.
One of my first thoughts, how can they tell if progress is being made or work being done? I found this article from a short article on ROWE. It is interesting to hear how to measure work and progress. Sometimes more work has to be done, even failed attempts made, before progress is made. This is especially true for creative work.
My next thought on ROWE is: isn't this what the self-employed, stand-alone consultants already do? They get to manage their own time and work for their own results. There are more risks involved with stepping out on their own, but I imagine you must be result orientated. If you put the effort into it and make the right decisions (and meet the right people), you can be more agile and flexible than the bigger corporations - who are stuck trying to measure work.
These were just a few random thoughts I have had on the subject.
